Mastering Color Harmony: Selecting Vinyl Shutter Colors That Complement Your Siding

Having shutters that accent your siding is key to improving curb appeal. It can seem daunting, however, with some thought and planning, you can choose shutter colors that perfectly complement and improve the overall appearance of your home. Here are some answers to common vinyl shutter color questions.

How do I choose shutter colors?

Consider Your Home's Style: The first thing to consider is the color of your siding & trim, as these colors are often permanent. The safest bet is to incorporate shutters that are darker than your siding. There is a reason that roughly 50% of vinyl shutters are black.

Of course, there are always exceptions. White shutters are very popular. They look especially good on grey and blue siding.

Should shutters match the front door?

All colors on your homes exterior should complement each other. A popular color style is to paint your front door the same color as your shutters. If the front door and shutters can't match, you can always match your shutters to your roof.

Should shutters be the same color as my siding?

When it comes to color styles every rule has exceptions. Typically, vinyl shutters contrast the siding, providing visual interest and depth to the facade. Matching shutters to the siding color will reduce the impact of the shutters, but can create a harmonious look.

Take the surrounding landscape into account

Consider selecting colors that contrast the home's landscape. A green shutter color might not stand out like white or gray if your home is situated in a densely forested area. However, green shutters could really pop if your house is located in a dry, arid region.

When in doubt use the 60% - 30% - 10% rule

60% of color comes from: Main Cladding: Siding, brick, accent siding, etc

30% of color comes from: Trim: Such as window trim, corner boards, fascia, garage door, etc

10% of color comes from: Shutters (and potentially front door)

Don't be afraid to use the Color Wheel

The color wheel should be taken into consideration as the first step in choosing the ideal shutter color. The relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors is depicted by the color wheel. A great way to make sure the shutter color stands out and complements the siding color is to choose a color that is opposite or complementary to your siding color on the color wheel.

Note: If you siding is a neutral color. The color wheel is less helpful.

I have selected a color. How do I check that it looks good with the siding?

It is a good idea to test the colors you have shortlisted before deciding on the shutter color. To see how it looks, obtain a sample of the shutter color and place it next to the siding color. It is important to look at the colors in natural light (outdoors is best), because the colors may appear differently depending on the lighting source.

Choosing the appropriate shutter color to match your siding color can be challenging, but it is not impossible. You can choose the ideal shutter color that improves the aesthetic appeal of your home by consulting the color wheel, consider the style of your home and the surrounding landscape. Once you have colors you like, physically check them outdoors. If all else fails, there are many design professional who can help create a great color palette for your homes exterior cladding.
